Wahpeton, N.D., college living tips

As a college student living in Wahpeton, N.D., you have different expectations than others when looking for your next place to live. You want your apartment to be in your price range, near North Dakota State College of Science’s campus and in an area with plenty of parks and things to do.

We thought we’d provide some tips to think about when you are looking for your new off-campus apartment.

1. It is less expensive to rent an off-campus apartment.
It is more expensive to rent an apartment on campus than it is to rent one off campus. Our 1102 and 1110 Loy Ave. apartments are located just blocks from the NDSCS campus. Rent starts at just $500 each month. If you are splitting that with three roommates, then each person would spend just $125 a month on rent. This is a lot cheaper than living on campus. According to NDSCS’s web site, the cost of a single room not including the meal plan is $2,301 per year for the 2008-2009 academic year. That’s $256 per month (assuming a student lives there nine months) for just a dorm room! That doesn’t even count the overpriced meal plans. It’s obvious you will spend less money by living off campus.

2. All of our Wahpeton apartments are within walking distance or a short drive from NDSCS.
You can easily walk to class at NDSCS from many of our apartments. Our 621 Third. Ave. N. apartments and our 401 Third St. N. apartments are just five blocks south of campus. They are also within walking distance of the Circle of Nations Indian School, Chahinkapa Park, Chahinkapa Zoo and Chahinkapa Pool. You may also want to consider our 720 Dakota Ave. apartments, just seven blocks south of the NDSCS campus.

3. You have more personal space and independence if you live off campus.
If you choose to live off campus, you have more freedom and privacy. Our apartments at 1307, 1309 and 1311 11th St. N. in Wahpeton have a large courtyard perfect for playing Frisbee or football with your friends. Each unit also has a fenced in patio. You might want to consider our apartments at 1205 and 1305 11th St. N. These units are just a few blocks west of the NDSCS campus and they are in a convenient area near restaurants and shopping.

4. There’s no problem if you want to continue your lease through the summer.
It’s inconvenient if you have to move out of your dorm room at the end of the school year just to move into a different one the following fall. But if you rent an apartment off campus, it’s easy to live in one place all year long. You could even keep your apartment for the next academic year.

5. Think about all the possible amenities our apartments provide.
Nearly all our apartments have garages, patios, coin-operated laundry or washer and dryer hookups, air conditioning, free parking, dishwashers and extra storage space. Our 1115 14th Ave. N. apartments are just a few blocks northwest of the NDSCS campus. They offer a 24-hour emergency service, a secure building and assigned parking spots with plug-ins. It’s just not possible to find all the same perks for the same price when you rent on campus.
